Walking on Sunshine

Aah, those summer days…and nights.

While St. Louis’ hotter-than-hot temperatures can be challenging, there’s still plenty to do while staying cool and having fun.

Expand Your Mind

AARP offers a Virtual Community Center filled with free interactive online events and classes. This site includes everything from exercise and wellness to movies and music. It’s a fun way to learn and grow.

Take It Outside

Whether you’re attending a Cardinal’s game or taking a stroll through our community, hydration is key for senior adults when enjoying the great outdoors. ActiveAging.com recommends dividing your weight in half to calculate your water intake. So, if you weigh 160 pounds, then 80 ounces of water – or 10 eight-ounce cups – is a good rule of thumb.

We All Scream for Ice Cream

Summertime is the perfect time for satisfying your sweet tooth. St. Louis has a vast selection of tasty options including:

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard – Our hometown institution has sold frozen custard for more than 80 years (and Christmas trees for over 50 years)! Known for its “concrete,” which was created in 1959, it is described as a “malt or shake so thick that it has to be served upside down. All we know is that it’s delicious!

Prairie Farms Dairy – Founded in 1938, Prairie Farms is comprised of over 700 farm families that produce the most scrumptious ice cream and frozen yogurt available at grocery stores everywhere. Prairie Farms is headquartered in Edwardsville, Illinois but enjoyed throughout the country.

Popular Local Hot Spots – There’s nothing yummier than a sweet treat from local favorites like Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Creamery, Crown Candy Kitchen, Fitz’s, and Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store.

Green Thumbs Up

Nature creates a healthy way to grab some fresh air plus a bit of exercise, which is why many of our residents find gardening to be a relaxing pastime. Some senior adults grew up directly connecting with the dirt; others began their journey once they had kids or grandkids. Either way, gardening makes you feel productive and creative. One suggestion: Try using raised bed gardens to alleviate excessive bending.

Here’s to a wonderful season filled with fun, sun, and a summer breeze that makes you feel fine.

Did you know…

  • The St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 World Series championships (the most of any National League team,) 19 National League pennants (third most of any team), and 14 division titles in the East and Central divisions.
  • Gelato – the generic Italian word for ice cream – contains 70% less air and more flavoring than other kinds of frozen desserts, giving it a density and richness that distinguishes it from other ice creams.
  • Two of the hardiest Missouri summer perennials are black-eyed Susans (they bloom all summer long) and purple coneflowers, which have a tall spiky purple or white flower that butterflies love.
