The Foster
Grandparent Program is a federally funded program established in 1965 to have
individuals 55 years of age or older and income eligible provide a stable,
caring, and loving relationship with children who have special or exceptional
needs.
As
a Foster Grandparent, senior volunteers serve as a role model, a mentor, and a
friend. Serving at one of thousands of local organizations-including
faith-based groups, Head Start Centers, schools, and other youth facilities-senior
volunteers help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide
children at a critical time in their lives. Put simply, the volunteer gives the
kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful
future.
Foster Grandparents
serve at least four hours per day, five days per week, either in the morning or
afternoon.Our Foster Grandparent
volunteers receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour, and are entitled to vacation
and sick leave time.Reimbursement for
transportation can also be provided.
All Foster
Grandparent volunteers must meet the following requirements:
Be 55 years of age or older
Meet income guidelines set by the
National Senior Service Corporation
Be in good physical and mental
health
Be a person of good character
Be literate and have average
intelligence
Display emotional maturity,
personal warmth, and social responsiveness
Demonstrate an interest in caring
for young children and adolescents
As a Foster Grandparent
volunteer, the senior volunteer will experience a special joy and warmth that
comes from sharing their experiences and compassion with children. When volunteers
share their love, time, and experience, they have the power to help a child who
needs them.
And remember:
When you volunteer, you're not just helping others-you're helping yourself.
Volunteering leads to new discoveries and new friends. Plus, studies show that
volunteering helps you live longer and promotes a positive outlook on life.
