The Foster Grandparent Program is a federally funded program established in 1965 to have individuals 55 years of age or older and income eligible provide a stable, caring, and loving relationship with children who have special or exceptional needs.

As a Foster Grandparent, senior volunteers serve as a role model, a mentor, and a friend. Serving at one of thousands of local organizations-including faith-based groups, Head Start Centers, schools, and other youth facilities-senior volunteers help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide children at a critical time in their lives. Put simply, the volunteer gives the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future.

686400145_sc_0052.jpgFoster Grandparents serve at least four hours per day, five days per week, either in the morning or afternoon.  Our Foster Grandparent volunteers receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour, and are entitled to vacation and sick leave time.  Reimbursement for transportation can also be provided.

All Foster Grandparent volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be 55 years of age or older
  2. Meet income guidelines set by the National Senior Service Corporation
  3. Be in good physical and mental health
  4. Be a person of good character
  5. Be literate and have average intelligence
  6. Display emotional maturity, personal warmth, and social responsiveness
  7. Demonstrate an interest in caring for young children and adolescents

As a Foster Grandparent volunteer, the senior volunteer will experience a special joy and warmth that comes from sharing their experiences and compassion with children.  When volunteers share their love, time, and experience, they have the power to help a child who needs them.
